Should you start a work at home business?

“I’m going to work from home!”

It sounds so fun , doesn’t it? Just *POOF* you quit the normal work and you’re outta there! A few weeks, or maybe a month and you’d just be rolling in bread! Other marketers have made it, why not you? You’re bright. You have a small bit of funding set aside. You’ve been tooling around the Net for a few years, you can do it!

Sure you can! But don’t eliminate the day job quite yet. 8^) There are plenty of first-rate reasons to consider working from your home and we’ll get to those in about a second here. But let’s get to the bad medicine before we take the good.

Terminate the day job? Fergitaboutit! Until you have 2-3 times the cash coming in from your online enterprise as you do your full time job, you’re not in any way ready to quit. You still have to have a salary to live on while you’re getting this very large venture started. You’ll have noone else to be dependent on and in the real world, almost 95% of smaller business startups don’t make it. So you would need to think that just about 1/2 of 1% of the ideas that rattle through your skull every time you pick up on the words “work from home” are seriously going to come true. Particularly if you’re coming into this cold (ie. a clueless newbie.)

It does not matter if you’ve been surfing the web for the past 10 years. Unless you’ve devoted a LOT of free time on things that include blog website and web site creation, graphics design, Internet promotion, keyword research, on page search engine optimization, off page backlinking and a couple of dozen other things that I’m not even close to mentioning, you’re not ready to quit the day job. Let me give you an example.

The search engines are everything. There are other methods to get consumers to come to your niche site, but most website vistors is provided by the search engines. 50% of traffic on Google comes from page 1. If you end up on page 3 or 8390 you’ll get a small trickle. And that’s the key point. Every dope in the world can (and sometimes I think DOES) put together a web-site. But without any people coming to view it and click on ads or pay money for products or services, your site is just a hobby. I’m trying to crack the ‘work from home” market, consequently this article. I did a quick search on Google for ‘work from home” and it came up with 1,780,000,000 sites/pages indexed. It’s a LOOOOOOONG way to page one. I’m not an idiot. I think I’ve found an in but you get the picture. Page 105 isn’t good enough.

Did I distress you? Excellent! Maybe I just stopped you from doing something horribly moronic. :)

On the other hand, there are some significant reasons to start an Internet small business so you can work from your house!! And a LOT of them! Compared to a “brick ‘n’ mortar” real world small business, a work from home business is just as hard to start but the payoff can be much nicer. Here are 10 reasons that having a web work from home business is so much preferable to having a real life business:

    1) No overpriced building to lease

    2) No workers to hassle with

    3) No payroll to concern yourself about

    4) No long, troublesome commutes to put up with

    5) Most of what it takes is a notebook computer, an connection to the internet and your time and persistency

    6) You can labour on your work from home business at your own schedule, from anyplace you choose, when you want and how you want

    7) Once established and performing it can make absolutely all KINDS of funds. There are individuals who generate $10-20 THOUSAND a MONTH! OR MORE!

    8) Before you get it up to speed and employ the service of someone else, there is no payroll or other intricate taxes (but check with a legal practitioner first)

    9) You can work outdoors on your laptop or computer in shorts and a tee shirt if you can find a wireless connection

   10) The sky’s the limit on the Internet. There are thousands maybe MILLIONS of ways to earn money once you’re over your learning curve!

There’s nothing like turning into a web entrepreneur! It’s a rush and if you do it right, it’ll be an achievement to be VERY proud of!
